Tick-borne encephalitis can only be protected against by timely vaccination, while there is no vaccine for Lyme disease.

The highest tick activity in Latvia is observed in the Kurzeme, Riga and Pierīga regions, but note that ticks are active not only in Latvia but all over the world.

On average, 20–40% of ticks carry disease agents. Over the last five years, almost 6000 cases of tick-borne encephalitis or Lyme disease have been recorded.

Which documents should be submitted to claim an indemnity for Lyme disease?
A medical certificate from the attending physician and laboratory results confirming the diagnosis: a positive serum Borrelia burgdorferi-specific IgM antibody test result followed by a rising IgM antibody titre immediately after diagnosis and a repeat test after 10–14 days or a positive Borrelia burgdorferi IgM antibody confirmatory test result (Immunoblot).
Which documents must be submitted to be indemnified in the case of tick-borne encephalitis, myelitis and encephalomyelitis:
- results of serological tests confirming the diagnosis;
- excerpt from inpatient hospital.

If a tick-borne disease (tick-borne encephalitis, myelitis, encephalomyelitis or Lyme disease) is diagnosed during the insurance contract, we will pay a one-off insurance indemnity of EUR 400.
There is no option to increase the sum insured under tick-borne diseases insurance, but you can buy more extensive coverage against tick-borne diseases under accident insurance.
The following tick-borne diseases are covered under tick-borne disease insurance: tick-borne encephalitis, myelitis, encephalomyelitis, Lyme disease.
The waiting period is 20 days from the start date of the insurance contract. If the policy is renewed without interruption, the waiting period does not apply for the following period.
There is no such rule – the tick can be removed at home. After the removal of the tick, you are advised to monitor your well-being and, if necessary, consult your general practitioner or a specialist.
If there is no evidence of disease confirmed by laboratory tests, there is no possibility of being indemnified.
If a tick-borne disease is diagnosed during the waiting period (20 days after the start date of the insurance contract), the indemnity will be refused.
Lyme disease can be contracted several times in a lifetime and the indemnity will be calculated for each new case. However, please note that you can only be indemnified once during the duration of the insurance contract (1 year).
The cost of examinations or treatment will not be indemnified under the insurance. A guaranteed indemnity of the full sum insured – EUR 400 – will be paid for the fact of illness, i.e., only if the diagnosis of tick-borne disease is confirmed.
